Richard Rouse, Oficial del Pontificio Consejo para la Cultura, nos cuenta los motivos del encuentro:
After the Pontifical Council for Culture’s last Plenary Assembly, which was dedicated to the theme of Languages and Communication, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi asked for some continuity to its reflections on the evolving languages, cultural values and changing community relations of the internet generation – an emerging culture – and how this demands a renewal of the Church’s pastoral activity.
It was clear that the blogging community could be an ideal partner for such a reflection as you have few qualms about saying what you really think, and a symbolical meeting of bloggers would stimulate such a discussion. Obviously such a theme had to be developed together with the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, and they have joined in willingly and brought a great amount of wisdom, expertise, and logistical skills to the preparations of an event which seems to be fulfilling many other ends and purposes.
Respondiendo a interpretaciones equivocadas aparecidas en Twitter nos explica lo que no es este encuentro:
So I simply wish to say that this is:
- NOT a meeting of Catholic bloggers and new media practitioners, although we have encouraged a Christian presence in the blogosphere.
- NOT a theoretical meeting on the philosophical and theological challenges to the Church posed by blogs, although it has stimulated the dialogue between Faith and the emerging culture of the web with its languages, codes, values, moral structure, raising the particular question how a hierarchical community meets a bottom-up community.
- NOT a simple publicity event to say that blogs are good and the internet is more than porn, yet I am glad that it has encouraged Vatican authorities and ecclesial authorities around the world to engage with the blogging community (with all its issues of fear, familiarity, wisdom, courage, prudence, coping with being misinterpreted).
- NOT setting stage for drawing up an official moral code, although we will have some witness of efforts to disagree without being disagreeable and notes on copyright issues.
- NOT a seminar for a more efficacious use of internet, although I expect some insights into marketing techniques and to discover new tools and ideas.
- NOT promoting blogging as a replacement for journalism, although we can expect some insights into the differences between journalism and blogging, both positively and negatively.
En que consiste:
- IT IS a meeting, a simple, physical meeting of bloggers, giving you, as a symbolic representation of the community of bloggers, the chance to express your needs, your culture, your hopes, aspirations and fears, in order that the Church may, drawing on the riches of Tradition, embrace you, walk with you, and continue learning to speak in terms and ways you can understand.
